Learning Difficulties: Effective Learning, Classroom management and Motivational Strategies

There are misconceptions about the range of characteristics seen in children and young people with learning difficulties. This can result in a great deal of anxiety and confusion.  Teachers, parents and school policy makers need a common understanding of learning difficulties and what can be done to ensure that children have access to the full school curriculum.  While specialist provision and special programmes are helpful they do not represent the whole picture.  The needs of children with learning difficulties can be met within the curriculum and within the mainstream school through effective learning and teaching.  It is important that learners are encouraged to have a self–belief in their own learning skills and that they are motivated to develop autonomy in learning.  It is therefore important to view Learning Differences in a holistic manner taking into account emotional and social skills as well as lifelong skills in learning.  This course will focus on the needs of students with difficulties such as dyspraxia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia and Attention Difficulties.

Dyslexia in the classroom: Ideas and strategies

This seminar will provide some insights into dyslexia and relate these to developing good practice in teaching and learning for the class teacher. It is important to develop effective learning and teaching strategies for students with dyslexia as often the answer does not lie in expensive resources but in appropriate classroom practices.

This seminar will indicate the key issues and points stemming from current research on the nature of dyslexia and show how these can impact on classroom practice. There will be considerable reference to hands on strategies that teachers can utilise without specialist training.

It is important that dyslexia is seen as a syndrome that can be successfully dealt with my class teachers in the classroom context. It is too easy for classroom teachers to feel deskilled when faced with a student with a significant difficulty and it is important that they have the insights and the knowledge to help them use their skills and opportunities to develop good practice for students with dyslexia.
