Alexa Raisbeck
Alexa is an artist with a difference!
She is currently studying for her Masters degree in Art and Media Practice at the University of Westminster was diagnosed with:
- Math’s learning disorder in 2009
- Dyscalculia February 2011
- Specific learning difficulties with a degree of NLD in May 2011
We are very pleased to offer an opportuntiy to Alexa to exhibit part of her work at this year's Dyscalculia & MLD conference and we hope that you will also feel able to support her petition and campaign to the government to develop and implement a strategy to improve awareness, screening, detection and support for mathematical learning difficulties: Petition
Brainwrapped was conceived from Alexa’s passion for cinema, projection and the mechanics behind the moving image but also for her discovery and subsequent need for the understanding of her dyscalculia. It was through introspection directly relating to this project that Alexa was to discover her other diagnoses of specific learning difficulties including Non-verbal learning disorder.
Alexa’s work is heavily influenced by experimental and art film, especially works that were created within the structuralist and structural materialist movements, which emphasised the medium of film and set out to demystify the film process. In her own work, Alexa focuses on the way in which her brain processes the world around her, primarily attending to the visual and at times the numeric, which subsequently leads to her questioning her validity as a visual artist. Alexa hopes through her work she can raise the profile of both dyscalculia and non- verbal learning disorder.
