I founded Learning Works with my wife, Dominique, in 1997. I am now the lead consultant and trainer.

I started my teaching career at Penlan School, Swansea, teaching ROSLA and 'remedial' groups of boys. Ever since then I have been passionate about getting a fair deal for those pupils who do not fit into the system, those that other teachers find challenging to teach.

This interest led me to become first a Head of Learning Support, a Research Fellow at University of Bristol and SEN Adviser for Wiltshire. In addition, I have also been involved in a wide range of national initiatives including computer-based learning, truancy and under achievement, SENCo training, Entry Level qualifications, summer schools for literacy and improving provision for Gifted and Talented pupils.

Pupils labelled as "challenging" have helped me to gain my best insights into teaching and learning. I use this hard earned experience as a foundation for my work with schools and colleagues, thus creating a bridge between 'special needs' and the mainstream.

tn_Goddard Fil 3Experience has taught me that it is more productive to work with what a child can do rather than attempt to remediate what they can't; that there are more similarities than differences in the way that children learn; that what the heart feels about new learning is as important as what the head knows and understands.

I enjoy finding solutions and I try to write practical, matter of fact resources that do just "what it says on the can!":

300 Tips for Busy SENCOs The Learning Toolkit
Individual Needs Fact Sheets about SEN Learning Styles
Monitoring Whole School Policy for SEN Memory Trainers
Writing your school's SEN Policy Study Skills
Concern, Assess, Provide (CAP It All) - A practical manual for asessing individual needs.
 INTO English
Ready Steady Go! A Book and CD Working with Dyscalculia

If you would like to purchase any of the above titles please click here to visit our online shop.

I am also fortunate to be a recommended trainer for a number of national organisations including:
  • nasen (formerly National Association of Special Educational Needs)
  • NACE  (National Association for the Able Child in Education)
  • IAPS   (Independent Association of Prep Schools)
  • IPD     (Independent Professional Development)
  • ISC     (Independent Schools Council)

tn_IMG_2416My presentations and training use the full range of media, drawing on video, TV/radio broadcasts and practical classroom examples to actively engage the audience. The days are focused, move at a pace, make you think and we have fun as we pool our collective wisdom to improve aspects of teaching and learning.

Here are a few of my regular talks:
  • Meeting Individual Learning Needs in the classroom
  • Reasonable Adjustments - A new look at differentiation
  • Personalising the Learning Experience
  • Special Educational Needs - Learning differences not difficulties
  • Overcoming Barriers to Learning in Maths
