Foreword:
There are so many different routes to becoming a SENCo. For instance, maybe it was the next, most available and practical career move for you. Or maybe it was always the goal of your teaching career. Of course there is always the possibility that when the unfilled post was being passed around the staff room the music stopped at you!
Whatever your journey, this role can in fact be the best and most exciting job in the world. You have the opportunity to keep up with the most current developments in education, the authority to unlock barriers to learning, to widen the scope of the future for many children and to support parents in helping their children achieve. You are in a unique position to discover new solutions and no single day will ever be the same.
We have often been asked by participants on our SENCo courses to get our ideas down in print. Well here we are and our purpose in writing this guide and designing the accompanying resources is to help you to meet the complex challenges you face head on. This is not a survival guide, rather it is one that we hope will enable you to thrive, so that you can step out and onwards, equipped and confident to be the effective SENCo for your school.
The content of this book is rooted in over 12 years of working closely with, and providing support to colleagues from a large number of independent schools. The shared experiences and input received have been invaluable in the development of this guide.
